Therapeutic Drawing Machines
Progress and Achievement
In Art Foundation, I have progressed a considerable amount, originally entering with limited knowledge of Art, with the intent to study Fashion. I have developed my research skills, sketchbooks and experiment with a range of art techniques. My original understanding of what I could produce has been challenged and my artwork has developed, due to experimentation and an increase in confidence. A significant moment for me was in Part 1, experimenting with the concept of drawing. I realised I am quite stylised and drawing machines gave me the freedom to produce larger drawings.
Pathway Choice
As the course as progressed, artists work due to research have increasingly influenced me. The artists range from graphic designers to photographers, but those who I find most inspiring are fine artists, painters such as John Martin and Turner. As well as abstract artists such as Jackson Pollock and performance artists like Rebecca Horn, who both convey emotion through their artwork, as Govinda Prasad Sah does. This expression of emotion is a major influence in my choice of pathway, due to personal experimentation; I enjoy producing paintings that display emotion. Reflecting back to a piece in part 1 in which I conveyed the emotions I had using drawing machines. I wish to continue fine art painting in the future, producing work that displays emotion in more experimental ways.
Project Proposal Aims and Realisation
In this project I intend to explore drawing machines, questioning what these are and their possible role in art therapy. This is due to my experience of drawing machines helping me to become more confident with art and initially express emotion. This personal connection between art and emotion has lead to an interest in art therapy. After research of art therapy, drawing machines and performance art done by primary and secondary methods, I will be able to develop my own work. This development will include experimentation with creating and testing drawing machines, challenging the limitations, how and what can be produced. Testing of various materials to discover what is most appropriate to work with is also a necessity for producing a finished piece. I intend to develop my work with a performance aspect, so I can show video footage or camera stills of the process of producing the piece along side the finished piece or a section of it, dependent on size. This aspect will require practice of filming my work and how best to do this. I feel it is important to show the creation of my work in this project as the pieces will be quite abstract and have little meaning without written and visual explanation in the display of it in the exhibition.
Evaluation
During this project I will display and evaluate my research and development work in sketchbooks. Evaluation of the projects progress overall will be done in a logbook and ideas notebook. This will allow me to control the projects progress more effectively and will aid me greatly in understanding the emotional aspect and in producing a finished piece, which will also be evaluated.Seven photos, seven minutes apart.
